Badendang or in Indonesian it is called berdendang (singing) is a storytelling tradition of the Minangkabau people. According to Mahyudin (1976), dendang comes from the word ‘den indang’ which means ‘I foster‘. Indang, apart from having the meaning of ‘to care for‘, also means ‘to winnow‘, which is to separate the rice from the rice by constantly swinging the nyiru. Parenting is meant here, namely caring for children by rocking the child while issuing words in the form of rhymes (pantun) or poetry with a certain rhythm.
According to the region, the chants can be grouped into the dendang of Luhak Tanah Datar, the dendang of Luhak Agam, the dendang of 50 Kota, and the dendang of the Pesisir. According to the rhythm, dendang is grouped into dendang ratok, dendang tari (dance), dendang kaba, and dendang salawat dulang. In this activity, we will teach foreign students about the techniques and methods of badendang, and how the rhythms are in the dendang. Apart from that, we will also provide basic philosophical knowledge about dendang Minangkabau, and about the upbringing of Minangkabau people to foreign students.
