This activity will provide knowledge to foreign students about how to write Minangkabau script, and learning experiences in surau. In the past decade, philologists from the Minangkabau Literature Department have conducted research and revitalization of nearly 10,000 Minangkabau manuscripts. Most of the manuscripts that were rescued currently have digital versions available, while the originals are stored properly in manuscript collection places, such as the Minangkabau Corner at Universitas Andalas, the Adityawarman Museum, Perpustakaan Daerah Sumatra Barat (the West Sumatra Regional Library), and Suraus, where the manuscript originates.
The philologists of the Minangkabau Department of Literature have succeeded in establishing good cooperation with the owners of the manuscripts. This collaboration ultimately facilitates access for academics to research and study these manuscripts. Surau is indeed a scriptorium in the treasures of Minangkabau manuscripts. The Minangkabau people used to learn to read and write scripts from their teachers in surau. Through the writing tradition in the surau, many Minangkabau classical texts were found.
There are three surau prepared for this activity, namely: the first Surau Khutub Khanah in Maninjau. This surau is a legacy of Buya Hamka. Here students will enjoy the natural beauty of Nagari Maninjau. Second, Suaru Simauang, Sijunjung. This surau is located in Jorong Tapian Diaro Nagari Sijunjung, Sijunjung Regency. Third Surau Pariangan, which is in the most beautiful village in the world. Participants in this activity will be trained on how to read and write the Minangkabau script. Starting from introducing the letters and grammar of the script language to the practice of writing scripts. Participants will also get the experience of living in a Minangkabau surau.
