Randai is one of the Minangkabau people’s traditional dramas, played in groups and accompanied by traditional music. Randai is usually played at night and is a means of entertainment for the people of West Sumatra.
To complete a randai story, it usually takes five hours. This is the reason why randai is played at night. Because the evening is the time for people to relax after working during the day.
In terms of story, randai raises Minangkabau classic prose stories. Cinduo Mato, Rancak Di Labuh, Anggun Nan Tongga, are the stories most often played on randai. For now, randai has grown. Various changes and adjustments were made to meet the needs of the times. The changes in question include, in terms of game duration, it used to take up to five hours to complete one randai story. Now, randai can be played for 30 to an hour. In addition, the stories played are not always classic Minangkabau prose stories, but new stories created by the performers themselves.
In this MGC program, barandai (become panggoreh) activities will provide foreign students with experience playing randai. In this activity, foreign students are trained to play randai so that they can perform in front of the general public.
